How does a DDoS attack work?

The primary goal of a DDoS attack is to disrupt a target's service, either by rendering it completely inaccessible or by overwhelming it to the point that it can no longer respond to legitimate user requests.

Most DDoS attacks are launched using large networks of compromised devices known as botnets. These often include unsecured or poorly protected home routers, CCTV systems, and even everyday “smart” devices like light bulbs or washing machines. Attackers gain control of these vulnerable devices and use them to generate massive volumes of traffic directed at a target IP address. With residential internet speeds now reaching up to 10Gbps, a single device can contribute significantly to a high-volume attack making large-scale DDoS events more feasible than ever.

Another common tactic is IP spoofing, where an attacker manipulates packet headers to send traffic to services that will reply with a much larger response, effectively amplifying the volume of the attack. These amplification attacks can dramatically increase the impact of a relatively small amount of original traffic.
